"Packet Row"?

Hello,

I recently saw in a book a painting by William J. Bennett, called "Packet Row", showing a part of the harbor district in New York in 1828. In the caption of the picture mentioned that at that time, the major import and export companies had their offices in "Packet Row" in South Street along the East River. However, googling the term "Packet Row" does not give much information. Does anyone here know anything about this "Packet Row"? Has anyone even heard about it? Or does anyone know any place I can find more information about this?

Thanks,
Henrik

Re: "Packet Row"?

Packet Row was named for the piers along South Street where packets and clipper ships docked.  Try the Seaport Museum (212-748-8786) for more information.

Re: "Packet Row"?

I don't have an exact location but the packet's were the regular steamships.  In fact, in 1817, the Black Ball Line made the first regular trips in the world, leaving New York on the 5th of each month and on the 1st, a ship would leave Liverpool.  .
