Sue Simmons out at NBC?

I must be psychic . . . a week ago, I said to the wife, "Boy, Sue is really starting to 'look her age' . . . I'll bet the network is looking to replace her with some new 'eye candy' soon."

Today news reports have it: Sue Simmons is out at NBC.  30+ years.  Sad to see her go.

On May 12th 2008 she didn't know she was on the air and she says to a camera guy What the f--k are you doing. It was mocked on saturday night live and david letterman was saying it for weeks after. The tape of her satying it is on You Tube and has over 2 million hits. Always liked her but at 2.5 million a year I guess its , so long Sue

Re: Sue Simmons out at NBC?

Also, according to the NY Post article, she is the highest paid local news anchor in the country.
NBC isn't doing well and neither is their local news, so goodbye Sue.  Same thing had happened to Len Berman, probably the best sports anchor in NY if not the country.  He was paid too much.  As my husband said today, it always ends bad....He should know.  He spent 25 years at NBC.

Re: Sue Simmons out at NBC?

Paddy--Bill Beutel & Roger Grimsby were a great team. I always thought of them as Dapper Dan & the Grouch.
Kay--You're right. Male anchors are allowed to age gracefully, women have to keep having plastic work. Things are changing, but not @ NBC, if it's true that she was dumped. Maybe she wanted to leave. She's almost 70 & has had back problems for a long time. I hope she uses her money to relax & treat herself to an easy life.

The double standard is still alive and well.  These people are reading news items, not in beauty contests.  And, since they're news readers, I I think it's also true that their salaries are off the charts, regardless of age or sex.

Re: Sue Simmons out at NBC?

Hello All! Sorry, but I'm in total disagreement with the majority of my board buddies on this one. I for one can't understand how NBC could have hired her in the first place some 30 odd years ago, let alone kept her on for as long as they did! She is not held in the highest esteem by many of her fellow newscasters in the field. She is one of the reasons that I stopped watching NBC news for the past 30 years! A journalist she is not. She has always stood out as an interviewer who could not put three words together if she did not hold some small notes or pieces of paper in front of her. Worldly she is not. I recall going to many Lincoln Center tributes where she had absolutely no idea who many famous celebrities were and was asking those around her who those people coming down the "red carpet" were. She never gave many people the impression that she was a particularly intellectually bright or articulate person. I believe her only claim to fame was that her father was a famous jazz musician, so that if any topic arose that had nothing to do with music Ms.Simmons was basically clueless. While co-anchoring with Chuck Scarborough she was clearly the "lightweight" and rarely was ever given the tougher in depth interviews or stories to report on. My personal opinion is that more than 30 years ago very few Black Americans were able to break into the news field let alone anchor the evening news. NBC paved the way for many other Black newscasters and journalists to move ahead by hiring Ms.Simmons and they should be commended for that; however that does not negate the fact that she is a lightweight within her field. An icon, maybe, simply by virtue of the fact that she was one of the first black women hired as a national anchor. Let's not forget Farah Fawcett was an icon too, however she was not an Academy Award winning actress. Sue had a great ride for the past 30 years and should be greatful for the" powers that be" to have allowed her to sit in that anchor seat. I for one wish her well, but it is clearly time for her to move on.DrSteve

Dr. Steve you are so right on the money. For a NYC Anchor on prime time,I never saw a reporter make so many mistakes. Over the past few years I never liked the way she spoke down Janet Huff (the weather forcaster at 5PM)
