There are two major components to the Gotham History Festival.
The first weekend will consist of a Conference on New York City History, at which
academics, public historians, educators, filmmakers and artists join one another
and the public at the CUNY Graduate Center and offer a slate of presentations
that is as varied as it is full. The guidelines for submission of presentation
proposals are quite flexible, as to time period and subject matter, and both
traditional panels and more dynamic presentations are equally welcome. For more
concrete information, it's possible to view the entire program from the 2001
Conference on our site or we'd be glad to send along a printed program in the
mail.
The second, and equally important component of the History Festival is comprised
of Events Around Town. Walking tours, plays, lectures, re-enactments, film
screenings, musical numbers, museum exhibitions, kids programs, and just about
anything else that has to do with the city's past is what we're talking about,
and Events Around Town goes on in all five boroughs for an entire week. Some
organizations plan special and elaborate events and others simply make sure we
already know what's going oneither way works. Likewise, the Events Around Town
encourages and promotes participation from large and small organizations and
individuals with equal enthusiasm, so don't be shy. Neighborhood and community
organizations that often get overshadowed have an especially exciting chance to
reach out during this weeklong celebration of NYC's past (and present). Take a
look at the variety and creativity that characterized the 2001 Events Around Town
or let us know if you have something in mind for 2003the sooner the better!so
we can start planning and spreading the word. For more information contact the
Gotham Center.
