Bellport-Brookhaven Historical Society
The Bellport-Brookhaven Historical Society is devoted to the preservation and interpretation of Long Island's past, and particularly the history of the Bellport, Brookhaven, and East Patchogue areas. The Society pursues this goal through its museum complex of several 19th century historic buildings on a 2-acre campus in the heart of Bellport Village: The Post-Crowell House (1831); the Milk House, the Gazebo (1850), the Shaw Blacksmith Shop, the John Chester Boathouse; and the Barn Museum (1904). The Barn Museum building maintains two floors of exhibits that permanently displays items related to the society’s collections, from Captain Wilbur Corwin’s duck decoy collection, to local photographer Frances H. Toms’ “Pig Skin Book,” a rare 1696 account of whaling expeditions in the area. Other exhibits include an ever-changing display of artifacts and other material culture representing local history. The numerous exhibits in the Barn Museum offer a glimpse of life on the shores of Bellport Bay.
A major purpose of the Society is the preservation of Long Island antiquities and historic documents and the extensive collection of books, manuscripts, maps, postcards and other memorabilia is also available to historians, researchers and local schools for class visits. The Society provides gallery exhibitions, museum exhibits, and educational programs to the community. Its publication of studies on local history and culture provides knowledge and insight into the cultural inheritance of the area.
