Brooklyn College Covid-19 Archive @A Journal of the Plague Year
Focus
The Brooklyn College digital archive documents any Brooklyn College student, faculty, staff member, alumni or community member’s story or experience related to COVID-19. We welcome anything that helps to capture the experience of the pandemic and the experiences of their communities.
History
Professors from a variety of disciplines met in May 2019 to collaborate to develop an archive for Brooklyn College students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members to contribute and preserve stories and documents related to COVID-19 pandemic. Because New York City has been at the heart of the pandemic, and because the Brooklyn College community includes so many essential workers and others who directly and indirectly affected, we felt there was a vital need for such an archive. Brooklyn College has important stories to tell, and we think those should be encouraged and, ultimately preserved.
After a good deal of research and preparation, we decided to launch the Brooklyn College collection within a large, omnibus archive: the Journal of the Plague Year. The JoTPY is run (and funded) by the public history program at Arizona State University and has a curatorial team from a wide range of institutions.
Collection
The digital archive currently has essays, personal reflections, poems, interviews, images, videos, photographs, social media posts, music and artwork.
Form of Collection
It’s a digital archive so all submissions must be in a digital format.
Emphasis
Our archive is mainly directed towards current Brooklyn College students, faculty, staff, alumni but also encourages community members to submit to the archive.
Time Period
We launched the archive in August, 2020 and continue to encourage submissions.
