Mattituck-Laurel Historical Society and Museum

The Mattituck-Laurel Historical Society is the custodian of the Hamlet’s archive which it displays in the Tuthill house museum — the main structure on a homestead complex consisting of two SchoolHouses dating from 1790 and 1846 respectively, a Milk House (1880s), and a Barn (c.1900) all donated to the society in the late 1960s — 2010. Also on display are old cameras, and the first Mattituck Fire Department helmet from 1907, plus other significant items. The fourth room contains a collection of 18th Century children's toys and clothing. The Mattituck-Laurel Historical Society and Museum is a useful resource on local history, and inquiries into the Victorian period.

The Archival collection consists of over 1000 manuscripts on Mattituck and 5000 artifacts including 18th and 19th Century furnishings, all donated by local residents. The archive also includes an intricate card catalog of residents to facilitate genealogical research. The museum is an homage to Victoriana with all but four rooms set up to display the items as they would typically be placed in a Victorian home. Of the four unfurnished rooms, one contains a collection of twenty-four 19th Century patchwork quilts; another contains 19th Century women's hats and shoes; the third, 18th Century rifles, World War I and II uniforms, and a large display of miscellaneous items: a whalebone scrimshaw, a ten-million-year old whale's tooth, and a whalebone harpoon.
