Oysterponds Historical Society

The Oysterponds Historical Society (OHS) maintains a campus with seven historic buildings located in the heart of the landmark historic district in Orient, NY. Exhibitions in Village House, the Old Point Schoolhouse, and Webb House on Village Lane in Orient, draw on OHS’s 60,000+ item collection of art, manuscripts, and historical objects, illustrating stories of the North Fork and the East End hamlets of both Orient and East Marion, NY, in particular.

The society has a collection of more than 60,000 items dating to the earliest days of European settlement, as well as Native American artifacts, nearly all collected from Orient and East Marion. The collection of documents and photographs contains more than 11,500 cataloged items with many more awaiting inventory. The library consists of more than 4,600 books about Oysterponds history and that of the surrounding region.

Significant holdings within the collections include: manuscripts and documents, logbooks and journals from whaling voyages, the journal of Augustus Griffin (1767-1866), early 19th century portraits and late 19th century ship portraits, and 20th century photographs by William Steeple Davis. The society also maintains numerous objects and material culture, including textiles (including quilts, coverlets, and pocketbooks), 18th and 19th century furniture and ceramics, wood and ivory or whalebone objects, costumes, carriages and sleighs, and farming and fishing tools and equipment.
