Suffolk County Historical Society

The Suffolk County Historical Society’s Library and Archives, assembled during the past 100 years, reflect the 300-year history of Suffolk County, its ten towns, and its inhabitants. Besides histories, the collection contains genealogies, biographies, periodicals, town records, ledgers, diaries, photographs, postcards, maps and atlases, cemetery transcriptions, ancestor charts, scrapbooks, Bible records and newspapers. Federal and state censuses for Suffolk County are also available on microfilm. Currently the library has more than 20,000 volumes and over 840 cubic feet of manuscripts. The Society also collects everyday artifacts, ranging from agricultural equipment and craft tools to household goods that relate to Suffolk County or that have wide appeal or great importance for the region. The museum's collections consist of approximately 20,000 objects that illustrate the history of Suffolk County and Long Island. The majority of the collections are from the 19th century, but they also include Native American artifacts from prehistoric to modern time. There is also a collection of textiles and costumes, examples of Long Island furniture and silver, as well as fine and decorative arts.

In addition, the library and archives is the repository of the holdings of the National Society of the Daughters of the Revolution of 1776 (D of R). The D of R membership applications have been indexed and can be searched by the Patriot's name or by the D of R Applicant’s name. This database is available at the website of the German Genealogy Group. The German Genealogy site is an index to the archive’s Ackerly Collection, a set of notebooks that mention many 17th-, 18th-, and 19th-century Suffolk residents.
