Freeport Historical Society & Museum

The purposes of the Freeport Historical Society are to promote and encourage historical research; to gather and disseminate information concerning the early history of Freeport in the State of New York; and to organize, preserve, and exhibit items related to the history of Freeport and contiguous territory.

The historical society has unique physical collections at the museum, in addition to collections available digitally online. In the museum’s maze of exhibition rooms exists an eclectic range of items such as artifacts from the Sidenham shipwreck (1872), an old train set, early radio equipment, a whale bone to a velocipede, a switchboard, vaudeville costumes, and Civil War memorabilia. The online collections which include books, photographs, manuscripts, papers, late 19th century postcards, and newspapers share the recollections of residents and the area’s early history. Unique items include The Student, a monthly/bi-monthly literary magazine established in 1905 and published by Freeport High School, tax Assessment Maps, Police Department Arrest Records, (1918-1932), early theater playbills & programs, and music scores that showcase the many artists and entertainers who resided in Freeport. The extensive digitized collection can be found on the NY Heritage site: https://nyheritage.org/explore/collections/field_alpha_sort/F?search_api_views_fulltext=freeport.
