Hallockville Museum Farm

Hallockville Museum Farm was created to preserve and interpret the history of farming on the North Fork of Long Island. The Museum originated with the preservation of the Hallock Homestead (the original portion of the homestead was built in 1765) and adopted its name Hallockville from the area — it is said that in the latter part of the 1800’s many of the houses belonged to descendants of Capt. Zachariah Hallock, which caused locals to refer to the area as “Hallockville.”

The Hallockville Museum Farm’s collection includes over 2000 documents and artifacts that relay information on the area’s agricultural history, local farms, and families. The collection dates from the mid-18th century to early 20th century, and includes antique farm equipment, antique transportation, domestic items such as homespun fabric, domestic equipment, vintage board games and other children’s games and toys. A unique document collection important to local history and genealogical research is the Virginia Wines Albums: a series of 20+ albums (proudly weighed at 181 lbs by Virginia, herself) on local families and institutions along Sound Avenue and Main Road. The Albums are organized in scrapbook fashion and include fragmented entries of maps, family genealogy, building and area photographs, portraits, diaries, letters to name a few. A portion is digitally accessible here: https://liu.access.preservica.com/uncategorized/so_39ec8f82-55a8-4c98-806f-806b446d46ce/

Another significant holding is Marie Wells Remer collection which is an extensive collection of artifacts from a Michigan family with Sound Avenue roots. The artifacts represent treasures ranging from material culture to household objects saved across six generations of women from the early 1800’s through the present. The original owners of these items are tied by complex kinship connections to the Hallock family who lived in Hallockville’s old homestead. Another extant collection is 98 oral history recordings of interviews with Hallock family members born in the late 19th century who speak about life on the Hallock family farm. These interviews were conducted in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
