The Coronavirus Chronicles

Focus

Reports on life in NYC during the first months of the pandemic in the spring of 2020.

 History

A reporting class at the Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY was working on a multimedia online project on aging in NYC, and then pivoted literally overnight (March 12) to creating a site for stories by Newmark reporters and producers on life—and death—in the city during the first weeks of the pandemic.

 Collection

We assembled and edited a broad range of text, video, audio and photo stories, dozens of them, primarily focused on people--top state and federal officials, healthcare workers, food deliverers, the young and old, the healthy and vulnerable, the helpers and those who needed help. Everybody, in a word.

 Form of Collection

Text, audio, video, photographs and interactive storytelling at the website for the school’s NYCity News Service— https://virus.nycitynewsservice.com/

 Emphasis

It covers anything and everything about life in NYC, including some stories from farther away that affected New Yorkers and from our student reporters’ home communities.

 Time Period

Primarily Mid-March through May 2020, with some additional stories posted through mid-September.

 Public Access

Available to all through the NYCity News Service at https://virus.nycitynewsservice.com/
