Lake Ronkonkoma Historical Society
The Lake Ronkonkoma Historical Society’s mission is to celebrate and preserve the rich history of the Lake Ronkonkoma area. The historical society operates two museums: The Lake Ronkonkoma Historical Society Museum which was founded in 1976 and is housed in what was once the Lake Ronkonkoma Free Library, and the Fitz-Greene Hallock Homestead, which is a 14-room home built in 1888 and is complete with all the original Hallock family furnishings.
The society was formed in 1976 after Ann Farnum Curtis and a group of dedicated volunteers organized with the mission to preserve the history of the Lake Ronkonkoma area. Farnum Curtis convinced the Sachem Public Library to lease the vacant 1916 Ronkonkoma Free Library building to her newly formed Historical Society, and after a two-year renovation, the Lake Ronkonkoma Historical Society Museum opened to the public in May of 1978. The Museum’s large collection of vintage photographs and historical items were donated by Ronkonkoma area residents.
