Westhampton Beach Historical Society

The Westhampton Beach Historical Society’s “campus” consists of the historic Tuthill House Museum (1840), The Foster-Meeker Heritage Center (1735)., The Meeker Carriage House and Privy (c.1845), and the Thurston Raynor Milk House (mid 1700’s). The Museum and Archives, stored in the Tuthill House, serves as a repository of historical information for the communities of Westhampton, Westhampton Beach, Westhampton Dunes, Quiogue, Remsenburg, Speonk, and Eastport.

The collection includes a wide range of materials including pre-Columbian artifacts, kitchen wares, agricultural tools, implements related to the early fishing and farming communities, family bibles, and textiles – all donated by local residents. A significant holding is the materials on the 1938 Hurricane unofficially named “The Long Island Express.” The collection includes photographs, newspapers accounts from the New York Post, Daily News, New York Times, Herald Tribune, Brooklyn Eagle, NY World Telegram, The Sun, Journal America and the Vancouver Sun, to name a few. Survivor Accounts are also recorded in two editions of the Society publication, As We Remember It (1988, 1998). Another strong collection is the Verity O’Brien Postcard Collection of over 300 vintage postcards, mostly from the early 1900s, showcasing scenes from the area.
