Yaphank Historical Society

The catalyst for the formation of the Yaphank Historical Society was a survey of the old homes along Main Street in Yaphank, done by Kathleen Cummings and sponsored by the Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities in 1972. Since then, the Society’s aim has been to increase knowledge of, and promote interest in, all subjects dealing with American History, relative to and encompassing Yaphank and the surrounding areas. In addition to caring for its archival materials, the Society works to restore houses that are a part of its 19th century historic district, among them, the Italianate style Robert H. Hawkins House (c1850), and the first house that the Yaphank Historical Society restored; The Homan House (c1825), home of the Homan family who owned the Homan Mills throughout the 19th century and is an example of a late Federal/early Greek Revival style of architecture. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. And the Mary Louise Booth House Museum — the birthplace and girlhood home of the famed editor/author/historian/ women’s rights activist/abolitionist.

The Society’s collections include letters, manuscripts, maps, paintings, books, newspapers, diaries, and other documents, portraits, photographs, and antiques. The strength of the archive collection is documentation on early prominent families and their descendants.
