Long Beach Historical and Preservation Society

Long Beach Historical Society and Museum, a U.S. Dept. of the Interior National Register site, and New York State chartered educational organization is dedicated to preserving, collecting, researching, and interpreting historical information on the area by making archival content available to the public through permanent and rotating themed exhibitions, and to researchers.

The society maintains a repository of thousands of items related to the City of Long Beach, New York from the late 1800s to the present. Documents related to the city’s management (city hall, police, fire, schools, and sanitation departments); photographs and colored postcards of Long Beach and surrounding communities; city guides, area maps and other ephemera; as well as audio visual materials of local history and local events such as beauty pageants, parades, lifeguard patrols, and city anniversaries are examples of the archive’s extensive holdings. There is also a substantial amount of period costumes and jewelry for those interested in early 20th century fashion. Researchers seeking to understand Prohibition on Long Island will find resources here alongside those pertaining to the legacy of New York real estate developer and politician William Reynolds (1868-1931) who started developing Long Beach as a planned 20th century community in 1907. While the bulk of the collection can be found onsite, digitized portions are accessible online at https://liu.access.preservica.com/archive with related digital collections on https://nyheritage.org.
